As you know, PCR Distributing licensed and publishes an interesting category of product: PC dating-sim games, commonly known as hentai games or eroge by fans, in which the goal of the game is usually to interact with several females and find a way to woo them. On the one hand the market for these games is much smaller than mainstream anime, especially since there’s no adult games corner in your local Best Buy like there is in major shops in Akihabara. Yet we’ve found something funny: being in this comfortable niche selling games that customers feel really passionate (and thus, want to support with their “dollar votes”) about has been incredibly successful for us, allowing us to actually grow our product category even while much of the anime world is in retreat. We’ve seen that our retailers who try out these games and who take the time to learn why they’re special become huge fans of the games, coming back for more very often.
And so I’m happy to tell you about the new game that we’ve finally shipped today — a bit later than we’d hoped, due to a snafu by the disc duplicator. It’s Moero Downhill Night, a fun PC dating-sim in which you help pretty girls win fast downhill races then, if you’ve played right, get to find romance with them. The game features an innovative racing system in which you must act as navigator for the girls and help the win races, and beautiful 3D rendered racing scenes (which were incidentally made by the staff that created Initial D) are too awesome for words. This game is the first in a three part series, and because all three games have a low price point ($24.95 list), we think the series will be like other series we’ve sold, with each chapter helping to increase sales for the other two. (The third game is going to be especially interesting since it’s a fully featured 3D racing simulator with “H” scenes).
